Rao's cookies

My oldest child participated in bake camp at a local bakery here in town, Rao's. Today, she made cookies and they sent home 3 cookie recipes. Yum! I was pretty excited, Rao's just happens to be Jeff's favorite and now Paula has to make them. However, her recipe (Jeff's grandmother's I think) for sugar cookies is rather divine, but we only eat them at Christmas.

All-Occasion Cutout Cookies

1/2 C butter or margarine
1 C sugar
1 egg
2-3 TBS of milk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
2-2 1/4 C flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 350 degrees after dough is removed from fridge. In medium bowl beat together butter, sugar, egg, milk & vanilla until light & fluffy. Add flour, bk powder & salt, beating until blended. Divide dough into 2 equal portions. Wrap & refrigerate until firm: 1 hour or longer. Prior to baking allow dough to stand at room temp until soft enough to roll easily. On a lightly floured surface roll dough 1/4" thick. With lightly floured cookie cutter, cut into desired shapes. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet & bake 7-10 minutes or until edges are golden. Do not over bake. Cool on racks and decorate as desired.

Variations: Put a little bit of food coloring into the dough during the final stage of mixing for a colorful cookie, or brush top of plain cookie with egg before baking & sprinkle with color sugar.

One problem: I wish they would have given us the icing/glaze recipe, that is the best part!
